Amarna (Part 3): Elite Houses.
The Overseer of Works, Hatiay, was one of Akhenaten’s most prominent and useful servants. He helped build pharaoh’s new city, bringing the vision to life, by organising work teams and resources for the massive construction projects. Along the way, Hatiay received many perks, including one of the nicest houses discovered at the site…
The North Suburb, reconstructed (Frankfort and Pendlebury 1933).
The estate / compound of Hatiay (Frankfort and Pendlebury 1933).
The central house of Hatiay (Frankfort and Pendlebury 1933).
Hatiay’s main entrance doorway, reconstructed from the fallen masonry (Frankfort and Pendlebury 1933).
A view of Hatiay’s house, with reconstructed doorway.
The altar, erected in Hatiay’s garden – it once held stelae of Akhenaten, Aten and Nefertiti (Frankfort and Pendlebury 1933).
